Poncho Sanchez and His Latin Jazz Band + Jesús Díaz Sextet
DATE: October 3, 2010
TIME: 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
LOCATION: Esplanade
Culminating our popular Latin Jazz Series, today’s concert features the best of Latin Jazz in a beautiful open-air setting.
Dynamo of Afro-Cuban percussion, Poncho Sanchez is one of the top Latin jazz artists of our time. Sanchez’s unique “Chicano conguero” style comes from a multicultural perspective and a variety of experiences. If music were about pictures, percussionist Poncho Sanchez's music would best be described as a kaleidoscopic swirl of some of the hottest colors and brightest lights to emerge from either side of the border. At any given show, on any given record, fragments of Latin jazz, swing, bebop, salsa and other infectious grooves collide and churn in a fiery swirl, with results that are no less than dazzling. His interpretation of Afro-Cuban music is rooted in his Tejano-Chicano upbringing and his years with legendary Cal Tjader.
The incomparable Jesús Díaz Sextet joins the pachanga marking Yerba Buena Gardens Festival’s 10th Anniversary and La Galería de la Raza’s 40th Anniversary!
