(August 2, 2006) - The Yerba Buena Gardens Festival announces the line-up for the Percussion Concert on Saturday, September 2, 2006 from noon to 4:00pm. The free concert features the Chuchito Valdés Afro-Cuban Ensemble, the Bay Area’s own Edgardo Cambón & LaTiDo performing with Uruguyan candombé drummers Lonjas del Golden Gate, and the Latin Jazz Youth Ensemble of San Francisco, YBGF’s resident youth company. Cuban-born pianist Chuchito Valdés, Jr., son of legendary keyboard giant, Chucho Valdés, performs Afro-Cuban Latin jazz, timba and traditional Cuban music from cha-cha-cha and danzon to rumba and son montuno. This ensemble performs originals composed by Chuchito Valdés and original arrangements of classic Latin jazz standards by Chucho Valdés Sr., Irakere and more. Edgardo Cambón & LaTiDo, the Spanish word for heartbeat, combine vocal harmonies and rhythmic percussion with the unique sound of the traditional tres guitar and flute. For this event, LaTiDo will perform with Uruguyan candombé drummers, Lonjas del Golden Gate. The Latin Jazz Youth Ensemble of San Francisco, directed by John Calloway, is an amazing youth performance group whose ages are between 12-17, Founded by Calloway, Arturo Riera and Sylvia Ramirez, this is a self-sustaining performance group whose mission is to motivate young people to play Latin Jazz and to act as role models for young musicians.
