THE 2006 YERBA BUENA GARDENS FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES THE INTERNATIONAL MUSIC SERIES

(May 10, 2006)  -- The 2006 Yerba Buena Gardens Festival presents the International Music Series, featuring artists performing traditional and contemporary music from a variety of countries, during lunchtime concerts on Thursdays in June and July.  Yerba Buena Gardens Festival Executive Director Linda Lucero says, “We love partnering with the local consulates and presenting organizations to showcase some of the best traditional and contemporary work from their respective countries.  This is what the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival is all about.”  The Series spans the globe from Italy to Sweden, Cuba to Japan and Bolivia to Israel.

Noi Due

Istituto Italiano di Cultura presents Noi Due, Franco Reguzzoni and Sal Di Maggio, playing the guitar and singing the best of modern Italian singers-songwriters by Fabrizio De André, Gino Paoli, Pino Daniele and Jovannotti.

International Music Series – Mexico
Balamcoatl

Thursday, June 8 - 12:30 - 1:30pm
The Consulate General of Mexico presents Balamcoatl, traditional indigenous music and dance using original pre-Hispanic instruments as well as modern replicas.  In their presentations they use tapestries, traditional dress, jewelry and head dresses, creating a magical, authentic ambience.

International Music Series – Cuba
La Familia Son

Thursday, June 15 - 12:30 - 1:30pm
Performing traditional son and old-school salsa with an inflection of East Bay funk and Cuban timba, La Familia Son is inspired by Afro-Cuban and Puerto Rican folkloric music.

International Music Festival – Sweden
Malin Nilsson & Maria Orlovskaya

Thursday, June 22, 12:30 - 1:30pm
The Consulate General of Sweden presents the annual recipient of the Jenny Lind Scholarship for promising sopranos. This years concert features Malin Nilsson, soprano and Maria Orlovskaya, pianist.

Natural Gathering - Habreira Ha'Tiveet

The Consulate General of Israel presents Natural Gathering – Habriera Ha’Tiveet. Reflecting the coming together of different cultures, Habrera Ha’Tiveet is a unique and pioneering ensemble that spans a whole range of influences and origins including Morrocan, Israeli, and Indian. 

International Music Series – Japan
Matsumoto Baisho

Thursday, July 6, 12:30 - 1:30pm
The Consulate General of Japan presents Matsumoto Baisho, master performer of Japanese folk music, who returns to the US for a special engagement at the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival. Baisho is a master of Akita shamisen and folk song, ha-uta, Tsugaru shamisen and other styles of folk music.

International Music Series – Bolivia/Peru
The Oscar Reynolds Trio

Thursday, July 13, 12:30 - 1:30pm
Bolivian-born Oscar Reynolds is an accomplished composer, internationally-acclaimed Andean flute master, guitarist, and flute-maker, whose music is rooted in the Bolivian tradition while blending Afro-Peruvian, Brazilian, and Flamenco traditions.

International Music Series – Brasil
Mauro Correa Quinteto

Thursday, July 20, 12:30 - 1:30pm
The Consulate General of Brasil presents Mauro Correa Quinteto, playing Brazilian classical, Brazilian choro, samba, bossa nova and popular Brazilian music, Argentinean tango and music from Latin America.
